Managing Project Management

Just as an individual project cannot be left to "just grow," so too the project management process requires attention. The larger the organization, and the greater the number of projects being supported, the more crucial the need for a systematic process which is understood by all the key players.

Designed as a six-hour seminar (from 10:00 to 4:30 with a half-hour lunch, so as to allow "desk-time" for the indispensable manager), Managing Project Management explores the procedures and behavior essential for success within a project or matrix organization. A brief overview of key PM tools (WBS and CPM) is included to provide a basis for discussion, but otherwise the course focuses on such topics as:

  • Estimating
  • Contingency
  • Resource bottlenecks
  • Prioritizing
  • Tracking
  • Resource leveling
  • Conflict resolution
  • Responsibility and accountability
  • The functional manager's role

This course is specially designed to meet the needs of that most crucial element, the functional managers whose resources are stretched to the limit as they juggle the dozens of projects they are called upon to support. Frequently, this group is ignored in the implementation of new PM software and methods. Yet few cohorts have a more critical role to play if the project management process is to be smooth and successful.
